About My Art
My interest in both figure and landscape leads to the portrayal of the two subjects together in most of my paintings. I am exploring a way to translate the intimate communication between human bodies into something that conveys the connection we have with nature. To me the multifaceted relationship can be either harmonious, mysterious, dangerous, or confrontational, but always powerful and transitory. It is my intention to adopt an ambiguous and all-encompassing approach in engaging the viewer to reflect on the complexity of nature as well as the consequences of our actions. My interest in the environment started before my art career. I was trained as a chemical engineer and had conducted environmental research through which I was exposed to the issues and became very concerned about the urgency of actions. With my portrayal of ordinary people in natural settings, I wish to captivate the audience not only to feel the connections but also to reflect on the risks and dangers we could face if we do not respond and act.
Although I start with a reference photo to work on my composition, my final product often deviates a great deal from the original image. The sketch serves as a greeting to my dialogue with the canvas, during which I let my intuition and imagination guide the process most of the time. The interaction with the surface involves thin and thick paints, variation of brushworks, smudging, scratching, and trial and error with layering and iterations. This process adds energy, spontaneity, expressiveness, and a sense of adventure that are important in capturing the unpredictability, complexity, and the transitory aspect in natural elements and figures. The dialogue with the canvas also enables me to constantly think of making connections between the figure and the landscape while painting, thus helps to convey these interactions to the viewer as the main theme of my works.
